Over the Hill Achievements: All 62, Ranked by Rarity

Most of the rare ones are odometer grinds. Plan your driving and they come on their own; the sunrise and photo ones need a trick.

VerdictLet the distance ones fill themselves, use the Q-menu camera for every animal, and watch sunrises from high ground with an unbroken view.

Over the Hill achievements come to 62 on Steam, and six of them are hidden. On October 29, 2026, fifteen days after launch, the rarest was ...Make a Long Journey (drive 1,000 km), which Steam rounds to 0.0% of players. Get Out of My Swamp (0.3%) and Wet Socks (0.4%) were next.

About the game

Over the Hill

The rule for this list is boring and useful: every achievement sorted by Steam's global unlock rate, then a call on the rare ones. Chase it now, or let it come. Most of the hard ones are odometer grinds (distance at night, in rain, on sand, through mud), so the answer is usually "drive with intent", not "go hunting". But a few common-sounding ones, the sunrise and the animal photos, misfire often enough that players have started threads about them.

Two oddities in that table. More players have finished a region's wildlife compendium (Naturalist, 1.6%) than have photographed 20 animals (Wildlife Enthusiast, 1.0%). Our read is that "20 animals" means 20 different ones, probably across both regions, which one compendium doesn't cover. That's an inference from the numbers, not something Funselektor has said.

And Fleet Owner asks for 18 vehicles. The game has 21, you start with three, and each of the other 18 is the reward for a challenge trail, as our Over the Hill car list lays out. Whether the three starters count toward the 18 isn't stated anywhere we could find. Plan for the worst case: every vehicle trail.

The music pair is the easy one to tidy up. Soundtrack to the Journey (54.3%) wants 10 km with a cassette playing. In Funselektor's own cassette short you open the inventory at 0:10, grab the cassette at 0:12 and the tracklist opens at 0:14. Sound of Nature (14.1%) is the same 10 km with the music off.

The rarest Over the Hill achievements: chase now or let them come

...Make a Long Journey (0.0%)

Drive 1,000 km. Many Small Steps... (100 km) sits at 14.4%, so this is ten of those. It's also the one that fills itself: every other distance achievement (night, rain, sand, snow, mud, Low Range, off-road) adds to the same odometer. One thing to know before you panic about progress: the odometer's last digit is tenths. A player who read 242 on the dial was told "That last digit is the tenths. You've driven 24.2km so far!"

Let it come. It will be the last thing you unlock, and that's fine.

Wet Socks (0.4%) and Get Out of My Swamp (0.3%)

5 km through water and 20 km through mud. Water is the trap. Under the Water (70.8%, hidden) unlocks when the water resistance bar fills and the engine dies, so most players have already learned that water is where cars go to stall. Per our Over the Hill upgrades guide, a stock vehicle floods after 8 seconds, the Water Resistance upgrades stretch that to 10 and then 12, and intake height differs per vehicle.

Chase Wet Socks on purpose: both Water Resistance stages on one vehicle first, then long shallow crossings. Mud has no trick we can source. It's 20 km of whatever mud the map gives you, so let that one come and notice when you're in it.

Birdwatcher (0.8%) and Wildlife Enthusiast (1.0%)

Five bird species, and 20 animals. Both fail for the same reason, and it isn't the birds. A reply in the "Steam achievements - Animal photo" thread spelled it out: "to take animal pictures you need to use the camera from the Q menu, not photo mode". The same reply says the reticle turns green with an animal in frame and brown for one you've already shot. Funselektor's wildlife short shows the green brackets at 0:16 and the journal page at 0:18.

So photo mode is for postcards, not achievements. Chase both once you know that, and treat a brown reticle as "move on". For which animals live where, and why Birdwatcher takes both countries, see the Over the Hill animals guide.

Close Encounter (10.3%)

A mammal from under 10 meters. Not rare, just irritating: "Everything spooks when coming within 15 metres even if I'm standing still with the engine off". The fix from the Canadian Passport thread is the species, not the approach: "Easiest to get with the beavers, since they don't run away as quickly." Another player cornered mountain goats on a ledge. Chase it at the next beaver.

Algerian Passport (0.7%) and Canadian Passport (4.5%)

"Complete everything" in each country, and Steam doesn't spell out what everything covers. Canada holds three areas (Emerald Lake, Gimli Ridge, Asgard Mountain) and Algeria two (Tassili n'Ajjer Desert, Aurès Mountains), as our map guide lists. Algeria comes second and plays harder; one player put it as "Algeria it's more difficult imo", and another advised high gear and momentum on sand. Let them come. They are the natural end of a full run, and Sand Surfer (7.2%) falls out along the way.

Odysseus (1.2%)

An hour of driving without going near a cabin. Cabins are where you repair and restock (the Mechanic or any cabin repairs fully and refills your tool slots), so an hour away means bringing your own fixes. You own seven tools from the start, including three repair kits, and you can't buy more. Chase it once you have all four tool slots, with repair kits in them, on a long run between areas.

A lone 4x4 with headlights on crossing dark dunes under a starry purple sky and tall rock spires Screenshot: Steam store page (Funselektor Labs)

Star Collector (1.6%) and A Gift from the Stars (5.3%)

Meteorites. In Funselektor's meteorite short, "something falls from the sky" at 0:04 and the advice at 0:06 is to "track the streak". Spotting one is Wish Upon a Star (10.8%); getting to the impact and extracting it inside 5 minutes is A Gift from the Stars. The radar tool points to the nearest landed meteorite at any distance but ignores falling ones, and solo you can only pull rocks up to Medium size (bigger ones need a co-op crew). The October 16 update also moved meteorite spawn points in every area.

Chase Star Collector with a radar in a slot; the pebbles pay for upgrades anyway, and A Mountain of Pebbles (2,000, at 6.4%) comes with it.

Law of the Land (2.2%, hidden)

A blue livery plus the 'Red & Blue Beacons' or 'Red & Blue Beacon Bar', fitted at once. It's a police-car joke, and being hidden can't help its numbers. Chase it the moment you own both pieces. It's a menu job, not a driving one.

Held by a Thread (2.4%, hidden)

Hang from your winch for 10 seconds with the vehicle completely in the air. Stock winch reach is 10 m and the last stage takes it to 15 m. We'd expect most unlocks to be accidents on a bad descent rather than planned. Let it come, and if it happens, hold still.

Fleet Owner (2.8%) and Problem Solver (3.7%)

Fleet Owner is the 18-vehicle question above, and the car list has every unlock trail. Problem Solver wants 10 recoveries. Steam doesn't define a recovery, but the game's item recoveries are the obvious match. Funselektor's Next Fest demo announcement listed the chance to "aid stranded off-roaders", and the community wiki on wikily.gg counts 14 item recoveries, each with "a damaged vehicle" at a start point that has to be brought to an end point. First Aid (72.3%) is presumably the first of them. Let both come with normal play.

Hidden Over the Hill achievements

Six are hidden. Three are things roughly half of players or more already have:

  • Under the Water (70.8%): fill the water resistance bar until the engine shuts down.
  • Professional Driver (53.5%): flip your vehicle.
  • Taking Flight (49.7%): make a jump.

Held by a Thread (2.4%) is covered above.

The last two take intent. Law of the Land (2.2%) is the livery-and-beacons combo. Under the Stars (9.6%) is the oddity: set up a campsite for the first time. The camp tool is one of the seven you own from the start, and it skips 12 in-game hours in about 44 seconds. Yet on October 29, fewer than one player in ten had used it. Do it tonight.

Over the Hill achievements that won't pop, and what players say works

None of the fixes below come from Funselektor. They're player reports from r/overthehillgame between October 16 and 22, and they're worth trying in this order.

Morning Drive (34.8%) and Golden Hour (22.8%)

Witness a sunrise, witness a sunset. One player watched at least 10 of each without either unlocking. What players say worked:

Welcome to the Wild with a Next Fest save

If you carried a demo save over, the tutorial achievement may not have fired. Funselektor's October 16 update lists the fix: "Fixed some achievements not being unlockable for players that played the next fest demo." One player who hit it confirmed the update fixed it. If yours still hasn't popped, the earlier workaround in that thread was resetting tutorial progress under Settings, Profile.

Master Mechanic (16.7%)

Fully upgrading one vehicle means all 16 upgrades, 675 pebbles in total. One player fully upgraded the Protector and the Trail Burner with no achievement. That's a single report with no official word. If it's missing for you, count your purchases on that vehicle: all 16, including the fourth Tool Slot and Winch stages at 75 pebbles each.

Our take

The achievement list is fine. (Mild praise, and meant.) Most of it unlocks by playing the way Funselektor says it wants you to: its wildlife short, at 0:22, says the aim is to reward "thoughtful drivers" instead of ones rushing to their destination. So, slowly, at night, in the rain, with a camera out. The two worth doing on purpose early are Under the Stars and Law of the Land, because they're free once you know they exist. The ones worth worrying about are the sunrise pair and the photo set, and both come down to a rule the game doesn't explain. Much of the rest is the odometer, and the odometer is patient. If you're still deciding whether to buy in, our launch reviews roundup and system requirements check are the place to start, and the Over the Hill guide hub links everything else.

How we checked this

We haven't played Over the Hill. On October 23, 2026, we pulled the achievement list from the game's Steam community stats page (62 entries, six flagged hidden); on October 29, 2026, we re-read the global unlock rates from Steam's GetGlobalAchievementPercentagesForApp API and re-sorted the table. We stepped through three official Funselektor shorts: the wildlife camera (green reticle at 0:16, journal at 0:18), meteorites ("track the streak" at 0:06, extraction complete at 0:20) and the cassette player (inventory at 0:10, tracklist at 0:14). They were posted between April and July 2026, before launch, so menus may differ slightly (our trailer breakdown covers the longer official footage). Player fixes come from seven r/overthehillgame threads read through Reddit's RSS feeds; they're reports, not confirmed mechanics. Upgrade, tool and vehicle figures come from our upgrades guide and car list, which cite overthehill.app and overthehilldb.com.
